How can we promote Christian unity? Palm Sunday offers a wonderful opportunity to bring together Christians of different denominations. Indeed, all of them profess the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ.

This year, Palm Sunday service brought together Seminarians from Saint Dominic Major Seminary, Christians from Mary Immaculate Parish, Christians from The United Church of Zambia, and a large congregation from the Anglican Church.

They gathered at St Mary’s high School to start the first part of the Liturgy of Palm Sunday. This included the proclamation of the Readings, a short homily, the blessing and distribution of palms and the procession to their respective churches. The procession symbolizes the triumphal entry of our Lord Jesus into Jerusalem to embrace His Passion.

The Pastor from the United Church of Zambia proclaimed the Gospel Reading, while the Anglican Priest gave the homily and the Rector of the Major Seminary blessed the palm branches together with the Oblate Fathers present.

Hymns of praise to Christ where sung by the United Church of Zambia choir. After this solemn service, the entire congregation processed together towards an intersection which is close to all the churches.

Then each Church walked towards its own Church to continue the rite of The Passion Sunday.

Fr Vincent Sakala, the main celebrant at Mary Immaculate Parish reminded us that we are to open our ears to the word of God, to emulate Christ, to suffer and not turn back and to absorb the hate and pain that other human beings inflict on us.

He assured us that God is our help and we will not be disgraced though we may be killed. The passion of Christ is our Passion and His Resurrection is our Resurrection if we hang onto Christ until death.
